Why Candles Aren’t Always the Budget-Saving Hack You Think They Are (And What to Do Instead)
As a luxury wedding planner, I often hear brides say, “I’ll just have lots of candles instead of flowers to save money.” While this might sound like a good idea at first glance, it’s not always the budget-friendly solution they expect. Here’s why candles can actually end up being just as costly, if not more, than beautiful floral arrangements—and what you can do to create that perfect balance without breaking the bank.

1. More Candles = Higher Costs
To get the same visual impact that florals bring to a table, you’ll need lots of candles. This means a variety of heights, types, and styles, which can quickly add up. A single statement floral centerpiece can create a stunning focal point, but replicating that impact with candles alone requires a much larger quantity, resulting in a larger budget.
2. Candle Holders Aren’t Cheap
High-end weddings often call for more than just simple tea lights in mason jars. Think elegant glass hurricanes, towering candelabras, or even custom-made holders. These specialty vessels are necessary for both safety and aesthetics, and they can cost just as much—if not more—than florals. Add in the fact that many candle holders need to be rented, and you’ll quickly realize they aren’t a cheap substitute.
3. Venue Restrictions & Fire Safety Fees
Many venues impose strict rules when it comes to open flames. Depending on the venue’s regulations, you may need to use enclosed holders, which require even more expensive rentals. In some cases, the venue might not allow any open flames at all, requiring you to use LED candles (which often look great but come with a hefty price tag for high-quality, realistic designs).
4. Labor Costs for Setup & Maintenance
Setting up candles may seem like a simple task, but in reality, it’s just as labor-intensive as florals—if not more. Candles need to be placed perfectly, lit before guests arrive, and maintained throughout the evening. If they start to burn out or melt, they need to be refreshed, adjusted, or replaced. At the end of the night, they’ll need to be carefully cleared away, adding extra labor costs to your event.
5. Candles Alone Can Feel Incomplete
While candles create a warm and romantic ambiance, they often need additional décor to feel truly complete. Without florals or greenery, candles alone can appear flat or unfinished. To achieve that stunning, layered aesthetic, you may still need to incorporate some florals or other décor elements—adding more cost to the final bill.
The Solution?
Instead of replacing florals entirely with candles, I recommend mixing them strategically. Incorporate statement floral pieces in key areas like the ceremony altar, reception tables, or entrance. Then, use candles to enhance the overall atmosphere. This way, you’ll achieve a beautifully balanced design, combining the elegance of florals with the romantic glow of candlelight—without stretching your budget beyond its limits.
At the end of the day, the key is finding the right combination that works for your wedding’s unique vision and budget. A thoughtful mix of florals and candles will elevate your design while keeping things cost-effective.
Happy planning, and may your wedding day shine in every beautiful way!
